# Patrick Wales-Dinan: Building Champions in Distance Running and Cross Country

The career of Patrick Wales-Dinan reflects a deep commitment to excellence in collegiate distance running and cross country coaching. Known for producing high-performing athletes and strengthening competitive programs, he has worked with respected institutions such as Long Beach State University, Duke University, Williams College, and later Harvard University. Across each role, he has consistently demonstrated the ability to elevate athletes to national-level competition.

## Elevating Performance at Long Beach State

When [Patrick Wales-Dinan](https://patrickwalesdinancoach.weebly.com/blog/ivy-league-honors-patrick-wales-dinan-after-championship-breakthrough) joined Long Beach State in 2012, the cross country and distance program began to see immediate progress. Over the following seasons, athletes under his leadership secured 32 top-10 finishes and set seven school records. He also coached more than 10 All-Conference athletes and guided six runners to NCAA qualification, marking a period of steady growth and improved competitiveness.

A standout moment came during the 2014 outdoor track and field season. Under his direction, Chris Low earned First Team All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Low finished seventh in the 800 meters and set a school record with a time of 1:47.52. His achievements also included a conference championship and victories at major meets such as the Stanford Invitational and Drake Relays, along with a strong performance at the Mt. SAC Relays.

At the same time, Chris Enriquez developed into one of the program’s top distance athletes. He qualified for the NCAA Finals in the 10,000 meters, becoming one of the first in program history to reach that stage. Enriquez also broke a 36-year-old school record in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:07.30 and secured a runner-up finish at the conference championships.

Both athletes went on to compete at the USATF National Championships in 2014. Enriquez stood out as the highest-placing collegiate runner in the 10,000 meters, and both he and Low earned selection to the NACAC U-23 National Team, representing the United States.

## Progress in Cross Country Competition

Patrick Wales-Dinan also made a significant impact in cross country. In 2013, he coached Enriquez to qualify individually for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. This achievement marked a major milestone, as Enriquez became the first Long Beach State runner in the modern NCAA era to qualify for the national meet. His 10th-place finish at the NCAA West Regional remains the highest in school history.

That same season, Enriquez and Hillary Zator earned All-Conference honors at the Big West Championships. Both the men’s and women’s teams improved their conference standings, finishing fourth and demonstrating continued progress.

## Immediate Results and Athlete Development

Even in his first year, Patrick Wales-Dinan delivered strong results. His athletes set three school records and achieved three NCAA Regional qualifying performances. Gabe Hilbert won a conference title in the 800 meters, while Enriquez posted the fastest 5000-meter time for the program in three decades.

The team earned four All-Conference honors and recorded its highest conference points total in six years. During the indoor season, Rosa Del Toro set school records in both the 3000 meters and 5000 meters and later qualified for the USATF Indoor National Championships.

## Focus on Academic and Athletic Balance

A key element of Patrick Wales-Dinan’s coaching philosophy is the balance between academics and athletics. Over the course of his career, he has coached more than 45 athletes who earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors. His programs consistently emphasize both performance and education, helping athletes succeed beyond competition.

## Experience at Duke University

Before his time at Long Beach State, Patrick Wales-Dinan served as an assistant coach at Duke University from 2011 to 2012. During this period, he helped develop one NCAA All-American, three NCAA finalists, and eight NCAA qualifiers. His athletes also included several All-ACC and all-region performers.

In cross country, he guided Madeline Morgan to All-ACC and All-Southeast Region honors and an NCAA Championship appearance. On the track, he coached Carly Seymour to an ACC indoor title in the 5000 meters while supporting multiple athletes in reaching NCAA standards.

## Early Success at Williams College

Patrick Wales-Dinan began building his collegiate coaching resume at Williams College, where he served as an assistant coach and women’s distance coach from 2009 to 2011. During his time there, he coached 10 All-Americans and helped develop Jennifer Gossels, who became an NCAA Division III national champion in both the 5000 meters and 10,000 meters.

He also made history by overseeing four national qualifiers in the women’s 10,000 meters in a single season. In addition, he contributed to strong team performances, including a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division III Championships.

## A Career Defined by Consistency

Patrick Wales-Dinan’s coaching career reflects a consistent ability to produce results at every level. From developing All-Americans and NCAA qualifiers to setting school records and supporting academic success, his impact has been evident across all programs he has coached.

His dedication to athlete development and team success continues to establish him as a leading figure in collegiate cross country and distance running.
