Teuvo Kalevi Kohonen (11 July 1934 – 15 December 2021) became a prominent Finnish academic (Dr. Eng.) and researcher. He became professor emeritus of the Academy of Finland.

Prof. Kohonen made many contributions to the field of artificial neural networks, including the Discovering out Vector Quantization algorithm, valuable theories of disbursed associative reminiscence and optimum associative mappings, the educational subspace formulation and unique algorithms for image processing esteem redundant hash addressing. He has published several books and over 300 ogle-reviewed papers.

Kohonen’s most famed contribution is the Self-Organizing Plot (furthermore known as the Kohonen device or Kohonen artificial neural networks, though Kohonen himself prefers SOM). As a result of the recognition of the SOM algorithm in a variety of study and in useful purposes, Kohonen is often thought to be to be the most cited Finnish scientist. The most recent version of the SOM bibliography comprises with regards to 8000 entries.

For the length of most of his occupation, Prof. Kohonen conducted analysis at Helsinki University of Know-how (TKK). The Neural Networks Learn Centre of TKK, a heart of excellence appointed by Academy of Finland became founded to conduct analysis linked to Teuvo Kohonen’s improvements. After Kohonen’s retirement, the center became led by Prof. Erkki Oja and later renamed to Adaptive Informatics Learn Centre with widened foci of study.

Teuvo Kohonen became elected the First Vice President of the Global Affiliation for Sample Recognition from 1982 to 1984, and acted as the valuable president of the European Neural Network Society from 1991 to 1992.

For his scientific achievements, Prof. Kohonen has received a decision of prizes including the next:

• IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award, 2008
